Not Just Great Football

Even their training camp sessions are different as the Eagles go all out to make their fans feel special. This includes raffles, food, autograph sessions, merchandise and special activities for children.
The Eagles have done some truly remarkable charity work as well. In 1971, the daughter of one of the Eagles’ players Fred Hill was diagnosed with leukemia. The team rallied around with individual contributions and fundraisers. Hill’s daughter was treated successfully and Hill himself was overwhelmed with the support of his team. It was decided that Hill and the Eagles would organize the Eagles Fly for Leukemia in 1972 to help those afflicted with childhood cancer. Thirty years later, the project has raised over $10 million for cancer research. The Eagles are also involved in community charity works to promote literacy via the Eagles Book Mobile. The Eagles Eye Mobile also gives free eye examinations. A number of special events are also organized for children in low-income neighborhoods.
The Philadelphia Eagles have also found their way into popular culture. The famous novel ‘The World According to Garp’ had a character that was previously part of the Eagles team. The Disney movie, ‘The Garbage Picking Field Goal Kicking Philadelphia Phenomenon’ featured Tony Danza as a garbage man who plays for the Eagles. Monday Night Mile High Special: Steelers at Broncos
This week, 2 AFC heavyweights square off for a great Monday night of football. The Steelers are fresh off their bye week and riding high off their Week 7 win to Minnesota, while the Broncos are out to prove they’re still legit after getting smacked by Baltimore.
Steelers on Offense
After a slow start, the defending champs looked like they were back in contending form against the Vikings. And unlike the Broncos, who came out flat after their bye last week, the Steelers will come out loose and determined in Denver. Led by Big Ben, Pittsburgh needs to control the pace from the start. Having Willie Parker back and healthy adds depth to the ground game, making the Steelers more complete and tougher to defend. Roethlisberger will get Santonio Holmes, Hines Ward, and Mike Wallace in the mix, who can all run after the catch. But Ben’s ability to draw out plays and find the open man downfield will be tough against a disciplined secondary that consists of Champ Bailey and Brian Dawkins. And you can’t forget Denver’s suffocating pass rush, led by The King (of Sacks) himself, Elvis Dumervil. Big Ben could spend a lot of time on the turf if he holds onto the ball too long. The key for him is to trust his teammates- that includes his receivers and the linemen blocking for him.
Broncos on Offense
Last week, the Broncos got wrecked offensively, scoring just 7 points off a Knowshon Moreno run. Denver’s top playmakers didn’t show up at all and what’s worse is that the Broncos only reached the redzone once. But let’s not get carried away- the Broncos’ offensive backbone is still intact. The Moreno/Buckhalter backfield tandem needs to show up and make noise against an awesome Pittsburgh run-stop. Kyle Orton should continue to spread the ball and be effective in managing the game. Josh McDaniels needs to help Orton get his swagger back by calling plenty of high-percentage passes for him and issuing the Marshall Plan (aka getting Brandon Marshall involved and back to game-breaking form). Denver’s O-line has to try to offset pressure from the Steeler pass rush and keep Orton’s mistakes to a minimum. Keep in mind that Orton has just 1 pick this year and only 2 home losses in his career. But the Steelers will do everything to get to his head (without actually hitting his head). With Troy Polamalu healthy and well-rested, his presence on the field is incredible. He can single-handedly alter Orton’s decision-making and will probably set up a couple of turnovers. Note- FS Ryan Clark may not play in Mile High due to medical complication related to sickle cell trait.
Ball-control is key. The Steelers will look to shut down Denver’s running game and force Orton to throw a lot, making the Broncos susceptible to pressure and turnovers. The longer Pittsburgh has the ball, the more Denver’s defense will wear out like they did against the Ravens. I have faith in the Broncos, just not this week.

The Angels Are Flying High In The West!
The Los Angeles Angels have fired off the loudest shot in week one of the second half of the major league season and that is bad news for the Oakland A’s and the Texas Rangers. The halos have now won 11 of their past 12 games and have taken their record above .500 (46-45) for the first time since April 28th.
If they want to contend they will need the continued support of several key players such as Rob Quinlan, Howie Kendrick, Kendry Morales and tonight’s emergency starter Dustin Moseley. This team has battled through numerous injuries with Escobar, Erstad, McPherson and new sensation rookie pitcher Jered Weaver.
The White Sox have a major problem with Freddy Garcia which makes me wonder if they will go across town to Wrigley and scoop up veteran thrower Greg Maddux. Garcia has allowed a team-high 22 homers in 19 starts and his ERA is an unflattering 5.07.
Where has the Red Sox pitching gone or maybe a better question is have they returned from the All-Star break? Oakland hammered Boston taking 3 of 4 and outscoring them 28-15. Their acquisition of Kyle Snyder from the Royals has been a disaster and his ERA in 2 starts is 10.03.
The Atlanta Braves have won the NL East 14 times in a row and they are intent on making a second-half charge. Their reign is over as division champs as the Mets have an insurmountable lead, but they are only 5 back in the wild card. The Braves tore apart the Petco Park record book, Jones hit a 424-foot, and a two-run homer in the fourth to tie the record of 14 straight games with an extra-base hit set in 1927 by Pittsburgh’s Paul Waner.
Chipper Jones’ third homer of the series and 14th this year helped the Braves to a sweep of the series. He hit two in Friday night’s 15-12, 11-inning win which was the highest-scoring game in Petco’s three-year history.
Brian McCann also homered Sunday for the Braves giving them 11 in the series — a Petco record for one team. The 16 total homers were also a Petco record eclipsing the 14 hit by the Mariners and Padres June 23-25.
The Braves scored 36 runs — a ballpark mark — on 43 hits in the series including nine doubles. The teams combined for 56 runs — also a Petco record — on 82 hits.

Pittsburgh High School Reform Task Force
The High School Reform Task Force
Superintendent Mark Roosevelt announced the creation of the Pittsburgh Public Schools High School Reform Task Force. The High School Reform Task Force, which consists of leaders of both secondary and higher education, private foundations and businesses, experts in workforce development, parents, and members of the community will carefully examine these principles and determine how best to implement an action plan for high school reform within the Pittsburgh Schools. The Task Force has been created to evaluate and reinvent Pittsburgh’s high schools as part of the District’s Excellence for All reform plan, which provides a roadmap for improving the academic performance of all students in the Pittsburgh Public Schools.
In an effort to make necessary educational reforms and improve the rate of Pittsburgh Public Schools graduates, Superintendent Mark Roosevelt commissioned a recent RAND Corporation study that revealed 64 percent of the district’s high school students graduate. One of key measures in the Excellence for All reform plan is to increase the graduation rate by 10 percentage points by the end of the 2008-2009 school year.
“Developing a comprehensive high school reform plan will be one of our most critical initiatives in the coming year,” said Roosevelt. “With the changes in the economy, we must improve the academic rigor and preparation of our high school students so they have the best opportunity to succeed in the workforce and higher education.” Superintendent Roosevelt is expected to present a comprehensive plan for high school reform to the Board by April 2007.
The Task Force will be led by Jan Ripper, Principal on Special Assignment for high school reform and Dr. Lynn Spampinato, Deputy Superintendent of Instruction, Assessment, and Accountability. It will meet for the next six months to extensively study best practices from national experts on high school reform and receive input on workforce development issues from local and national corporate leaders, economists and job-force training experts. Task Force members will also visit nationally recognized highperforming high schools in urban systems throughout the country and determine which of the best practices studied are right for the Pittsburgh Public Schools. The work of the High School Reform Task Force is being funded through a grant of $255,000 from The Fund in Excellence in the Pittsburgh Public Schools, a new fund established by the local foundation community to support the Superintendent’s district reform agenda.
Excellence For All
A central principle of Excellence for All is that all children can learn at high levels, regardless of their age, experience, or background. The Task Force is charged with the creation and realization of a reform initiative that supports this standard and prepares Pittsburgh’s high school students for the promise of post-secondary education and career and technical employment. Their evaluation will be guided by the following six core principles identified as necessary for transforming high schools by the National High School Alliance:

? Empowered educators
? Accountable leaders
? Engaged communities and youth
? Integrated system of curriculum, instruction, and assessment supports.
